These pictures are not mine! In spite of the fact that Michigan's black bear population has grown to an extimated 10.000, it's really difficult to sight them. A bear can smell a man from a distance and quickly hide in the forest. Black bears weight up to 350 kg but can still easily outrun the fastest human!

Unlike the other two species of American bears, Brown bears and Polar bears, that live in more open, treeless areas, black bears have sharp, curved claws which they use to climb trees to find food and avoid dangers. Just because they have evolved to climb trees they rarely attack. Only Grizzly bears - a type of brown bears - sometimes attak, but they don't live in Michigan forests.
